Design and Implementation of an Energy Consumption Monitoring System

Abstract
The development of efficient energy management and monitoring systems is receiving more attention as a result of the growing concern over energy consumption. In order to meet the growing demand for effective energy management, this work develops a system for monitoring energy consumption. To measure and regulate power usage, the energy consumption monitoring system makes use of an ESP32 microcontroller to which an LCD, relay, and PZEM-004T power module are connected. While the relay controls the load through a transistor that provides signal control from the controller, the LCD, which is connected via a backpack, shows data in real time. The power module measures the circuit's voltage and current. The controller is powered by a transformer-based power source that has a 5V regulator. For effective energy management, a Telegram bot enables remote monitoring and control, providing users with real-time updates. To test the system's accuracy and efficacy, a small-scale real-time setup was used. The findings demonstrated that the system effectively monitored patterns of energy usage since it makes sure that the residential building's lamps are on for twelve hours every day, saving about 0.5 kWh of energy. Additionally, the device's implementation resulted in energy savings of 1.049 kWh, 2.857 kWh and 0.427 kWh from the use of a standing fan, television and mobile phone charger, respectively. The results also demonstrated that unmonitored electrical load energy consumption has resulted in significant energy waste, which can be minimized or avoided with the help of the designed energy consumption monitoring system.
